Chapter 16

I woke up to my phone ringing. I groggily looked to see who it was. It was my mom.

“Oh, shit!” I quickly answered. “Mom!”

“Where are you? The ceremony is in two hours!”

“I’ll be right there.” I hung up and ran over to Morgan.

“Wake up! I forgot about my graduation ceremony!” For some reason she wouldn’t wake up, body limp, mouth hanging open. I put my hands to my head and looked around the room in desperation, and decided to just go on foot. I sped out of the room, bounded down the stairs and out the door, and ran all the way home.

I dramatically burst through the front door, breathing heavily and putting my hands on my knees. Mom, Dad, and Jacob were all sitting in the living room looking at me incredulously.

“My…alarm didn’t go off,” I gasped.

“Look at you, you’re a sweaty mess,” Mom said. “I’m not even going to ask where you’ve been. Get in the shower and get ready.”

As I walked past Jacob, I looked at him and mouthed, “Molly.” He smiled.

“What is it?” Dad asked.

He shrugged. “I’m just glad she made it in time.”

I showered, blow-dried my hair, which I never did, and put on the dress I was supposed to wear under my gown. I never wore make-up. Finally, I tore open the packages that contained my yellow cap and gown, put them on, found my tassel under my desk, and stumbled into the living room.

“I’m ready.”

The school was within walking distance, so it didn’t take long to get there. As we walked inside I was immediately greeted by Eva as my parents and Jacob went to find seats. We arranged ourselves into place and soon the ceremony started.

Maybe it was a residual effect of the molly, but I had never heard the band play so beautifully as they did during “Pomp and Circumstance.” I felt more connected with my fellow classmates than I ever had. I cried during Eva’s valedictorian speech.

I stared off into space for the rest of the time, but before I knew it, it was over. We were standing up and people were throwing their hats and spraying silly string.

I fought my way out of the crowd as quickly as I could. I was done. I would never see most of these people again.

But Eva and the others were huddled in a group in the entrance hall and I smiled.

“Rae!” Eva said, running up to give me a hug. “Come to Jessie’s tonight. We’re going to have a bonfire and celebrate.”

For some reason I agreed immediately. It wouldn’t hurt to have one last “party” with them.

I couldn’t wait to get home and text Morgan and Kenzie. When we got home I sat on the couch with a sigh.

“We’ve got to hurry so we can get ready for your open house,” Mom said.

I put a hand to my head. I had completely forgotten about my open house. But two hours later, as relatives and family friends I never saw handed me envelopes of money, I realized I was being given the money I needed to move out.
